I used to have a resume on here…but they’re so boring.
Instead, I’d like to simply tell you how I became the freelance writer I am today.
For the past five years, I’ve been a full-time freelancer, for both publications and businesses. I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of terrific clients — you can see a list of them on the home page. I also write the Make a Living Writing blog, where I teach freelance writers how to grow their income.
Before that, I spent nearly 7 years as a staff writer at the Puget Sound Business Journal, covering business doings in our great city of Seattle. I wrote about retail, ecommerce, restaurant, nonprofits, higher education and more. Interviewed Schultz, Nordstrom, Sinegal, Bezos, and many more.
We filed at least four stories a week, so let’s see…that’d be 1,200 articles, give or take. I worked for two great editors, Rami Grunbaum and Don Nelson. Man, I learned a lot.
One of the cool things I got to do was go on KPLU and talk about upcoming PSBJ stories with their host, Dave Meyer. My radio clips live on in the station’s archive.
Before PSBJ, I spent five glamorous years covering home improvement retailing for the trade publication National Home Center News (now Home Channel News). I went on over 100 business trips, from New York to Anchorage. I learned how to sell merchandise at 100% markup and why we all buy what’s on the endcap, even if it’s not the best deal.
Even farther back, I did a one-year stint editing an alternative paper in San Pedro, Random Lengths. I also produced, wrote, and served as on-air talent at Pacifica Station KPFK Los Angeles.
I’ve written freelance articles for many publications — some highlights: Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, In These Times, Daily Variety, Seattle Homes & Lifestyles, Today’s Careers, Utne Reader, Nation’s Restaurant News, L.A. Business Journal, and Seattle Business.
I attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, and later studied journalism through UCLA Extension. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and have lived in the Seattle area for 15 years.
I have been married over 25 years to Lawrence Tice — yes, I was a child bride, thanks for asking! — and my kids are Evan, 18, Eylian, 9, and Ariella, 8.
